Pepper Linux 4.0

Technology Preview Release

OLPC

The latest edition of Pepper Linux is specifically designed for devices running battery-powered processors from AMD and Intel. Pepper Linux includes the Pepper application environment plus the complete Pepper application suite, completely integrated with a reduced-footprint version of Fedora 7 Linux.

We are making this preview release available to our partners to enable them to get early access to our on-going development. While we have significant mobile Internet device-specific features and capabilities under development, this release is does not yet include some of them. We will be periodically updating this downloadable image and will notify you when they become available.

Supported Platforms

Pepper Linux 4.0 currently supports many generic PCs and Intel Dothan and McCaslin and AMD Geode LX processor-based devices. The following products and reference designs have been tested.

  • Generic PC (any i386 or x86 compatible with many but not all configurations)
  • Intel Classmate PC (Intel Celeron M)
  • Intel Zi9 (Intel McCaslin Reference Design)
  • Inventec S18 Convertible UMPC (AMD Geode LX800)
  • FIC Ion A603 MiniPC (AMD Geode LX800)
  • Asus R2H UMPC (Intel Dothan)
  • DTResearch WebDT 166 (AMD Geode LX800)
  • Samsung Q1 Ultra

Installation Instructions

Note: This installer will wipe your hard drive and install Pepper Linux from scratch. Make sure all data is backed up or install on a testbed system.

  1. Download and burn Pepper_Linux_F7-20070720-i386-CD.iso (659 MB) to a CD.
  2. Plug a USB Keyboard, USB Mouse, and USB CD-ROM Drive into the target device.
  3. As appropriate for the BIOS on your device, set the BIOS to boot from a USB Optical Drive first and the Internal Hard Drive second.
  4. Boot from the Pepper_Linux_F7-20070720-i386-CD.iso CD.
  5. When prompted, select the "Kickstart with ..." option for your desired device name configuration and press Enter to start the installation process.
  6. Note: If you perform a manual installation instead of using one of the provided kickstart options, you must disable SELinux. We strongly recommend installing via one of the kickstart options.
  7. Note: Due to the fact that USB CD-ROM drivers may take a while to load, an error may occur stating the software was unable to find a configuration file. Simply wait 30 seconds and press Enter twice at the error dialog to start the installation.
  8. When finished, the CD will eject and the device will reboot.

Known Issues

The following are known issues in the current build and will be addressed in an update:

  • Wireless networking is not currently enabled on all devices — networking is supported on all devices via built-in Ethernet module or a USB Ethernet dongle. Wireless networking is supported on the Samsung Q1 Ultra and Intel Classmate.
  • Touchscreen input is not currently enabled on all devices. Touchscreen input is supported on the Samsung Q1 Ultra and Intel Zi9.
